Things that light up...

I have come to two revelations over the last 24 hours. 1. The 4th of July is the best holiday EVER. 2. Thunderstorms are crazy cool in the desert.

For the 4th of July I spent my morning at the hospital seeing patients. Nothing ridiculously exciting there…oh I did see a circumcision. It was…um…you know what there’s no way to describe that, it was pretty much how you are imagining it. Then I went swimming for the afternoon with Laura, her sister Amy and their friends. (I am happy to say I now have some colour to prove that I have been in the south.) And then comes the good part…the fireworks. They were everywhere. There were 2 or 3 different shows around the city, plus everyone buys their own and sets them off in their backyard. We got a ladder and climbed the wall around Laura’s yard and sitting there we could see them all around the city. Then once the boys got tired of that we set off our own fireworks in the backyard. It honestly went on for hours. I love fireworks to begin with, so I was in heaven. I will come back to the states every year just for July 4th!

Then tonight (after a long day at the office where we worked right through lunch) I went for supper (and laundry) at the Raes’. I have discovered that their house is the meeting place for everything. It just attracts young people. There are always some there, and always something going on. Kind of like my mom’s house in high school. It’s great. Anyway, as we were all leaving we realized that there was a huge thunderstorm going on. Not just huge, massive. It fills the whole sky. As far as I can see in both directions. It is by far the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. I’m actually sitting in the pitch black in my room right now watching it while I type (for all you geeky types, no my computer is not plugged into anything during a storm! I’m just writing this and I’ll post it later.). It’s not just forks of lightning, it is trees! The lightening is brilliant white, and it illuminates every cloud in the sky. And there’s none of this every minute or so, like back in Canada. It is absolutely non-stop. There is literally not a moment where a piece of the sky somewhere is not lit up. I know this is a horribly geeky and artsy post…but I can’t imagine how much power it must take to put on a show like this!

Wild.

Lots of love
Pamela

p.s. There are still fireworks going on tonight…I think they must be on sale today. Hahahaha.

Well well!! Thunderboomers are spectacular in the desert eh! Was the lightening skipping along the bottom of the clouds too?? That is something to see!! I saw that once in Portneuf Qc as I kept one of my gramma's 100 year old friend company during a storm. She was absolutely terrified of thunder storms. I was fascinated.

Yes Americans like their fireworks. The bigger the display the better. I guess that next year you'll just have to go to Buffalo for the 4th.

What with all your work, no lunches, social life etc. etc. do you ever get a chance to get some shut-eye or would that be a waste of precious time?? Just remember that Doctors too should get their rest so that they can be sharp as tacks the next day. One wouldn't want to be known as a dozy doctor.

Have fun and keep on learning there kid.
    :-))
