Rural Lessons Re-Learned

Last week in Emerg I had the pleasure of chatting with a lovely man while I was trying to make sure that he didn't have any breaks or serious injuries. He had been in a fairly horrendous rollover, where really he was lucky to be alive, let alone walking away from it - and I kept telling him as much...

Me: Wow, you are truly lucky to be alive sir. I am amazed at how well you are doing.
Man: Well to tell you the truth I'm more worried about my dog. She was pretty shook up and I think she hurt her back end.
Me: Oh I'm sorry to hear that. Was someone going to take her to the vet for you?
Man: No, they were just gonna drop her in my house, so I really need to get going soon (while still on a backboard wearing a c-spine collar..hahaha)
Me: Oh....hmm....they were gonna put the dog in your house? I thought you said the truck was so smashed that you couldn't get your keys out of it?
Man (and all the nurses in unison): The house isn't locked!!
Me: *sheepish*...oh....yeah....I forgot where we were for a minute.

Hahahah....So then I came home, amused at my day at work, and how when you live in the middle of nowhere, and know everyone, you don't lock your house or your car - and I proceeded to recount the story to my mom:

Me: Funny eh? I totally forgot they don't lock doors here.
Mom: Well don't you remember we never locked the door at the farm!
Me: Really? I guess I don't remember that.
Mom: Yeah the one time I locked it, I locked myself out, so I never did that again!

HAHAHAHA.... So basically us rural people are either really trusting, or so simple that we lock ourselves out and so its easier and safer to leave the doors open. HA!

Lots of love
Pamela

p.s. Just so you don't worry - I do still lock my car and house here, even if no one else does. I don't need some desperate junkie who knows where I live (cause everyone does!) wandering by to see if I have anything at home with me!

I remember ma and pa (the rural names for my parents) used to lock the door, but I think mom was worried someone would come in, sneak up behind her and yell boo.
