Northern Side Effects

While I do love this town, there are a few things I had forgotten about living in "the North". First of all - the sun does not seem to get up before me. That is just wrong. It's against nature to get up before the sun has even risen! So this morning it was a very grumbly Pamela that crawled out of bed and into the shower to get ready for work.

Then, as I rushed out to my rental SUV I realized - that frost is so thick it is not going to melt away with just some defrosting. So I searched the car for a scraper and finally found one...but sadly could not find my mittens. Next I discovered that I am not tall enough to own an SUV....because from one side or the other I cannot reach the centre of the windshield. So I put on an interesting show for the neighbours trying to semi-climb/lie across the hood to reach the middle. I finally gave up and just used lots of windshield washer fluid.

Arrived at clinic just a few minutes late....I thought....but turns out I was actually about an hour early. Sigh. Where did I get it in my head that I started at 8am instead of 9am?!!?! So off I trudged across the parking lot to Robins Donuts (there is no Tim Hortons in these parts!). There was the usual 'morning meeting' of local retired men discussing the state of the world. It came to a complete and silent halt when I walked in, and I could feel the eyes burning into the back of me as I ordered and they all tried to figure out who the new girl was.

So here I sit, with my nice warm coffee, watching the sun rise over my sleepy little town, while I finish up yesterdays billing. I suppose there are worse ways to start the day than getting up an hour too early and scraping the car off without mitts. But just in case - I think I'll go buy mitts before tomorrow :)
