Home...home on the tundra

So here I am in my cute northern home, which may or may not be in the Tundra. It's hard to say cause as you all know I lack geography skills. But here is what I can tell you about Moose Factory - it's far away, it's cold and it's got a lot of evergreen trees. The town/reserve is on an island of its own across the river from Moosonee. This is cool for a couple reasons - in the summer you take a water taxi across, and starting in one week you take a helicopter!! WOO!!

Flying up this week was an adventure and a half. By the time our tiny little charter landed in Moosonee, then Kaschechewan, then Fort Albany, then Attawapiskat....I nearly puked. Small planes are really rough when they land on gravel runways! But a week at the nursing station was totally awesome and a cool way to start the rotation. Saw lots of interesting things and met some lovely nurses who do locums up here.

Now I'm settled into my Moose Factory home and enjoying Northern life. The morning sunrises are absolutely fantastic, and they happen late enough in the day that I get to see them! It's a bit odd being up here for so long with so little luggage (one bag of 25 pounds and a backpack was the limit)....I'm mostly happy with what I brought but wishing I had some more plain t-shirts and sweatshirts, and definitely wondering why I didn't think to bring nail clippers, tweezers or floss. Oh and a big warm bathrobe would have been ideal. Details.

I made a big long hike to the grocery store with my backpack the other day, much to the amusement of the locals. I don't think they walk much in the cold. Well I actually don't think they walk much... ever. This is a little slice of pickup truck heaven and they all scoot around all day in their quadcab delights.

I'm certainly improving my knitting skills on the long evenings, and have more than half finished my first sock! Look forward to pics of that to come.

Lots of love
Pamela

p.s. Send vegetables....apples cost a dollar each and a bag of frozen peas was 6 dollars! yikes!
p.p.s. I miss you Cally and I'm sorry I'm such a punk and never write! We'll hang out when I get back in December :)

Currently listening to: the sound of the sump pump. Who knows how there is water down there when its cold like this.
Currently reading: an article on how 1/4 of COPD exacerbations might actually be pulmonary embolisms. Fascinating stuff.

  1. sounds like a shopping list / request for a care pkg to me ;) I'll have to check out shipping costs to Moose Factory ... wonder what happens if you take back another 25 lbs when you come out for the conference/meeting? will you have to leave 25 lbs behind when you come home for good?
    enjoy!
