The roadtrip is done and I have arrived safe and sound in Texas. It was a loooooong drive and I am not looking forward to ever driving anywhere again. In fact, I had such an aversion to cars yesterday that instead of taking me out for a nice dinner in a town a little ways away, Ray took me Subway at Walmart - cause it is basically next door to our hotel :)
I don't have too much exciting to tell you about the roadtrip. Basically the first 5 states look like Ontario, and then I got to Texas. hahahaha. Michigan and Indiana I just drove straight through. Slept the first night in Effingham Illinois. I tried to stop in Terre Haute (pronounced: Tara Hoe-t) but sadly there was a diesel truck show this past weekend, and every hotel was full. Also every parking lot had boys in their pickups revving the engines and blowing smoke around.
Missouri....again nothing interesting to report. Except that one of the highways I wanted to take was closed and I spent a half hour driving around in circles. I thought if I turned off the highway, the gps would recalculate a new route for me.....turns out it calculates a route back to where it told me to go in the first place! Sigh. So finally I picked a road headed south and just kept driving until I got far enough away that the gps actually came up with a new plan.
Oklahoma had a LOT of toll roads. Maybe they don't have taxes and instead they have tolls? I don't know....but I'm pretty sure I spent over 20 dollars in tolls.
And now here I am in Texas. It really is a whole other world down here. You'll be happy to know I'm already picking up the Texas/southern drawl type accent. It amuses Ray to no end when I "talk Texan" to him. We've already tried out some great Mexican food and THE BEST BBQ I've ever had. Not only was it the largest pulled pork sandwich you've ever seen, but I got "pink stuff" as a side dish. Pink stuff is basically what I would refer to as church-lady-jellied-salad (cool whip, jello, cottage cheese and pineapple).
Today I've been fighting with intermittent internet, and the troubles of not having a local address or an American visa card. Sigh. And apparently in Texas "common law" is not defined by having lived together for a certain length of time. It is some sort of affidavit that you sign at the County Clerk's office basically swearing that you act like you are married. So later this week we are off to the County Clerk so that Ray's company will FINALLY recognize me as his partner, and I'll get added to the health insurance. Definitely a must when living out of country!
But for now, I'm going back to reading and thinking about how I will never drive anywhere ever again. Oh and looking up a massage therapist to work out the spasms in my "gas pedal" leg.
Love
Pamela
