In the presence of greatness

I had the extreme honour of hobnobbing with some of the most important people in medicine, on this side of the province. But of course, being completely blonde....I was oblivious for the first hour.

I have this extreme knack for not realizing just what I've gotten in to. I did this at the last conference I attended where it had to be pointed out to me that I was eating dinner with ALL the presidents, and I was in fact at the 'power table'. Thankfully, by the grace of God, I seem to avoid putting my foot in my mouth during these escapades of ignorance.

This week's event was a planning session at a golf club about making better links between a rural hospital and the big city. I arrived about 2 hours late (with the surgeon) after being held up in the OR, so I quietly took an empty seat and enjoyed the end of the first presentation. Then as we all got up for coffee I chatted with this lovely man who came over and introduced himself to let the other student and i know that he was from Newfoundland and why we should go to school there. Then when I sat down I realized - he was the next presenter! And not only was he the next presented, but he is the biggest big wig at the heart institute, and one of the 50 most cited researchers (or something like that)....and here I was discussing why St John's would be a great place to live. Sheesh!

THEN I discover that the man I'm sitting beside - is the head of Medicine! Like holy crap. It almost gave me palpitations. You know how people freak out when they meet a celebrity? This is how I feel when I meet high up people in medicine...these guys are legends! They are trail blazers, and innovators, and all those fancy buzz words...and here they are having a cup of coffee and shooting the breeze with me. *sigh*

Lots of love
