I think we all go through phases in life. And I'm quite positive that all of these phases have something to do with our state of mind at the time. Phases where we like a certain band, have a favourite style, enjoy or particular drink, or eat a favourite food. That last one is of particular interest to me. I love food. Pretty much any food. (Well...maybe not brussel sprouts, I still think they are devil veggies). And I have noticed that I go through extreme phases of what I like to eat. There is the healthy phase where every plate has that perfect - 1/2 veggies, 1/4 starch, 1/4 meat. The junk food phase (always short lived...my poor stomach...) of greasy crap 24 hours a day. The vegetarian phase that includes all sorts of salads, wraps, beans, lentils and assorted soups. The ethnic trends of thai, indian, mexican, bajan and greek all pop up quite frequently. But there is one trend that I am quite sure would perplex even the greatest psychoanalyzer...meatapolooza.
Meatapolooza is like a festival of meats. Meats from all different animals, with all different seasonings, prepared different ways, often served with another meat. During one of these phases previously in my life my shocked and disgusted roommate nicknamed our freezer - the arc - because it contained two of every meat. I could quite happily eat bacon for breakfast, a salad topped with meat for lunch, snack on pepperettes in the afternoon, a HUGE hamburger for supper (and maybe a little of that leftover bacon from breakfast) and then have some beef jerky. But the strangest part of meatapolooza is that it comes with a craving for fruit. I have been known to walk to the mini-mart in the middle of the night to buy jerky and apples, because I could not imagine eating anything else. For dinner tonight I had a bacon mushroom burger and strawberries?!?! If Marc were around I would be begging him for Biltong and those dried fig thingies from the South African store. I'm like a cave woman...all I want to eat is dried meat and fruit. I'm pretty sure I'm crazy. Good thing psych is my next rotation...I'll get this all figured out!
In other news, I went on a fantastic snowshoe adventure this sunday after church. One of the docs I work with took me on a 2 hour trek up to a ridge that overlooks the lake. It was a blustery snowy moody weather kind of day but once we were inside the forest it was picture perfect lightly falling snow. It was so refreshing to be out in the air (seeing the light of day!) discussing life in general as opposed to cases at the clinic. Just the break I needed :)
Lots of love

p.s. I almost forgot the obligatory bizarre story from work! I saw a lady with a huge cystocele...basically means that her vaginal wall has prolapsed and when she bears down the pressure pushes her bladder out of place. So far out of place that it actually partially comes out her vagina. Yup. You heard me right. You can reread that all you want and it will still seem somehow impossible...I assure you - it is not.
