And so it begins!

The journey of a thousand miles begins with....a trip to MEC!

So it's official. I leave in 6 days! I have flights, rental car, place to stay, people to work with and cute clothes for hiking (no need to look frumpy in the desert! hahahaha) . All I need now is a digital camera, some scrubs, and to make it through my exams tomorrow.

For those of you who don't know, this is my first big adventure on my own. Well...its my first big adventure in general unless you count moving to Hamilton. (And for those of you who have lived here, I think we can all agree that Hamilton is not really the hub of anything all that exciting!) And owing to the fact that I'm fairly naive, somewhat of a blonde, very new to medicine and working in a hospital, and tend to get into random shenanigans on a regular basis....its safe to say that this blog will soon be filled with hilarious stories of my escapades!

p.s. Welcome to my blog :)

We all know that you are an adventurer. Just because this adventure takes you south of the border and into the desert, you will still handle it with flying colours. Just don't forget your hat, sunscreen (#55), lots of bottled water and a snake bite kit.
With all the supports that you have in place, just don't be afraid to ask questions. New Mexico is a very different geography and climate so don't assume that what you're used to here is what you'll experience there e.g although deserts are very hot in the day time they are very cold at night. When going somewhere tell someone where you are going and when you'll be back. Don't assume that you cell phone will work everywhere!
I'm very proud of you and excited to hear of you treks and adventures.
    Lotsa luck!

We went to New Mexico for our honeymoon and found it fascinating.
Roswell, as you know, is the place where they found a crashed UFO and the US government did autopsies on the alien driver. With you medical skills you'll be able to autopsy as many New Mexico weirdos as youlike.
Your summer sounds great! Hope the medical stuff goes well and have lots of fun too.

To add to what your dad said about poisonous critters.
"As a rule, specialists say, the thicker the claws, the less dangerous the scorpion; the viciously venomous ones usually have slim pincers."
    source - http://www.outdoorclub.org/Critters_FAQ.html

Apparently there is only one potentially dangerous species in the Southwest U.S.A., the bark scorpion. So when in doubt, just turn your shoes upside-down and tap them out before putting your feet in them. :)

Oh and you might find this web page interesting, but I hope you never need to be a patient here:

Initially you might feel a little unsettled being so far from home - so take this quote to heart,
"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature.... Life is either a daring adventure or nothing."
Helen Keller, The Open Door (1957)

    Or perhaps a lighter quote,
"A smile is a curve that sets everything straight."
    Phyllis Diller

    So keep smiling Pam.

    Love,
    cousin Doug

  4. In the spirit of passing on some travel wisdom, I'll leave you a quote that's helped me through some tough times on my trip.

"My cat's breath smells like cat food!"
    Ralph Wiggum
