Here are some important things that I have learned so far while living in Thailand:
1) Things are not electrically grounded very well here. The water cooler, for example, will shock me every time I touch it. Sometimes just a buzz, worse if I'm holding my metal water bottle.
2) There is no need for weather forecasts - the weather will be High of 34, Low of 25, chance of rain. This will happen every day, without fail, just like the sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
3) Cats do not like people.
4) Dogs do not understand English, and as such do not respond to: "hello puppy!", "Sit!" or "don't jump on me!"
5) I cannot touch a monk and he cannot touch me. Now this is not touching in the scandalous sense, but when I give him donations I have to drop them in the bowl, and then he sprays me with holy water (which tends to go in my eyes) while I bow in silent pray type pose, and then he drops a bracelet in my hand, but at no time can we touch. Haven't figured out why yet....but that's how it goes.
6) The colour of the flags for the King and Queen and important people depend on what day of the week they were born! Random, but true.
7) Geckos can climb all the way to my 3rd storey window, but then will not sit still for a picture. Damn geckos. Also - if you turn the light on while they are on the ceiling, they tend to fall off. hahahah
8) Honking your horn means - "I'm coming through", or "I'm going straight". It is never angry and does not mean get out of my way. Being angry or loud here is considered very impolite and simply not done.
9) You should never go to the market when you are hung over. Pig heads and flopping fish do not seem nearly as interesting in 34 degree heat when your head is pounding and you are trying not to hurl......so I've heard.... from...umm...other people.
10) It is perfectly reasonable for a stall at the market to sell electronics, next to a dildo, next to a gun. This is just sensible one stop shopping.
11) Bookstores are just as enjoyable to me whether I can read the language or not.
Lots of love
Pamela
p.s. Tomorrow I am off to an Indian themed potluck lunch with "the ladies"! Should be fun! and Ray is offshore again :(
