My Gammie passed away (that's my Grandma on my dad's side) two weeks ago now. I wanted to write a blog right away and tell the world what a wonderful lady she was....but I didn't know where to start or how to put it. How do you express how your family affects your life? How do you put that into words?
Then today I was talking with a good friend about Christmas traditions and I asked if he had a stocking growing up. He said - yes, and it even had my name on it. Which got me thinking to my stocking....which my Gammie made for me. She made one for each person in my family. Each a little bit different, but all matching in a way. She made mine pure white because I was her very only granddaughter.
Over ten years ago now she gave me a shoebox of stocking making supplies. At the time I was so shocked and confused, thinking - why would she give me this, why doesn't she keep making them? But I gladly took the fun little treasures and kept on the tradition for the 'new Airds'. I made one for Melinda, then Jocelyn, then my little bubbaloo Alec. And last year I collected up everyone's stockings and gave them a little facelift to repair the bits that were falling off and missing. It's not just the things that people do for you that make you feel special. But the things they teach you to do. The things they pass on to you. The person they teach you to be.
