Honduras - Part 3 Fun and Games

Clearly no trip is complete without some fun and games. After Monday to Friday doing Brigades we were all ready for some R&R. Saturday morning we drove to a resort near San Pedro Sula for the weekend. Now keep in mind - I use the term 'resort' loosely here. However, it had windows, and air conditioners, and hot water, and mirrors. It was incredible.
It was really nice to kick back and relax together. Everyone lay by the pool most of the day, hopped in the water when they got to hot, and hit the soccer field when they got too restless. The guys all tried to make the tallest human pyramids they could in the water...which was so cute because it turned grown men into 5 year olds instantly. And on our last night there, they had a beautiful candle lit dinner for us. We all got dressed up, reminisced about the week, and enjoyed a beautiful serenade from Paul (the Priest, who was a professional singer!)While we relaxed I had the time to think back on the week and all my favourite moments. So here are my top 10:

10. Singing to the cockroach that lived in our bathroom.

9. Attempting to learn how to play soccer....and nearly having an asthma attack.

8. Gastro. Now you might think that being horribly ill would not be funny....but you and your roommate are both sick, and your bathroom has no door, you have no choice but to laugh.

7. Watching Star Wars in Spanish.

6. Dancing to fantastic spanish music while our guides acted as body guards to keep away the sketchy locals. On that same note - having our leader stare down a guy who was watching me until the guy gave up and went away. Can I get a body guard in Canada?! It's pretty hilarious.

5. Hanging upside down from the play structure at the resort at 6:30am contemplating life with Malika.

4. Realizing half way through an incredibly rude and raunchy song on the radio (that we were all singing at the top of our lungs) that I was sitting beside our Priest. YIKES!

3. Watching lightening bugs from the patio and the massive sky full of stars as we listened to the crackle of sugar cane burning in the field below.

2. Malika waking me up by yelling at the donkey outside our window.

1. (While helping David remove an ingrown toenail)
David: So now you just dig under like this, and lift like this, and...umm..Pamela you're not paying attention to where you are pointing the light.
Pamela: umm....there is a pig behind you
David: What?!
Pamela: Yeah a pig is standing right behind you in the door.... its getting kind of close to the sterile field...I'm not really sure what to do about that.

Of course there are a million more stories, and happy memories, but I don't know how to put them all down on paper. And I'm not sure if I would want to....some things are nice to just enjoy in your mind. But I can tell you truly - I am happier now than I have been in over a year. I give full credit to this trip, and the amazing people I had the pleasure of meeting.

Lots of love
Pamela

  1. Hey Pam, did you happen to volunteer with MEDICO? I did a very similar trip in 2003 to Honduras...

Thanks for the updates, you are a great story-teller!
