Have I mentioned that I love medicine? Love, Love, LOVE! I'm not even being sarcastic here!
Maybe its the sleep deprivation talking. I am a little delirious after the 30 hour shift I worked. But I am seriously enjoying Internal Medicine. My team is wonderful. My attending is really sweet and soft spoken and I doubt he has ever yelled at anyone in his life. The nurses are not being rude and scary. Well...except for the ER nurses. I'm not really sure what's up with them. I don't want to say that they are ALL evil...but if looks could kill, I would have died several deaths last night. And my partner in crime (the other clerk on my team) - she made some mistakes in the orders that she wrote. Let's just say, it was a good thing she was already gone by the time they noticed! Hahaha.
Ok but seriously. If you are crazy enough to love people, and to be willing to work crazy long hours with no pay (or technically paying them to let me be there since I'm a student) just for the satisfaction of making someone smile - medicine is the career for you! And if you get giddy and hyper and think the world is very very funny when you haven't slept and are trying to write orders at 4am - then you too could be a doctor!
However, if you do not like vomit, snot, feces, pus, blood, or the smell of any of these things - stay away! I very nearly got applesauce mixed with crushed up meds spit on me today. I have to work on my footwork to stay out of the way of random projectiles launching from patients! And I feel that it should be officially noted for the record that putting in an NG tube (ie. tube that goes up your nose, down your throat and into your stomach to feed you) is incredibly gross and looks horribly painful. I was quite sure the guy was just going to throw up all over the place.
So now that I've made it through one whole week of medicine (well almost a whole week...its nearly friday right?) I think a roadtrip is in order to celebrate! I'm off to the country for the weekend :)
Lots of Love
Pamela

ReplyDeleteWeekends with Lisa make the medicine go down, eh!
ReplyDeleteI could see you dancing for joy (not dancing leaping!!) on top of my puter screen as I read this extatic blog.
Keep it up and don't let the bad days get you down. Try for some sleep too.
Yeah Pam!!
ReplyDeleteKeep on slogging and don't get discouraged by the dark days. I'm always so amazes at how positive you can be in the midst of the blood, guts and gore!!
Tweed retreats are always good for the soul and the mind.
