Fun and games

What would a trip be without a little fun and games?
Copan was a heaven compared to the town we stayed in last year. It is a very touristy place, and much much more safe, so we were able to wander around at will. There was a great coffee shop across the square with a caramel latte to die for. And the other corner of the square had a dessert place that was DIVINE. I could quite happily grow obese there. There were also lots of restaurants and bars that we could wander to in the evening for some entertainment, dancing and refreshments. This led to learning some important lessons:

1. Men lying on the side of the road at night are likely passed out, not dead. Don't go check on them.
2. Port Royal is good, Imperial is better.
3. Pizza places do not stock good white wine.
4. Traditional Honduran music all sounds the same. No really! It's the same notes, over and over, with different words, and perhaps different drumming. If you've heard one song, you've heard them all.
5. In Honduras, Long Island Iced Teas are made with 5 FULL shots, not part shots of 5 types of alcohol. They can and will knock you on your ass.
6. Tuktuks are incredibly fun. (See the pic of crazy little red taxis!)
7. Dancing with someone can be taken to imply that you want to have sex with them. Don't dance with men you don't know.
8. When at the pool, happy hour begins at any time of day....even 9:30am.

The other great thing about being in Copan was visiting their Mayan ruins. Very cool. I am always in awe of how a group of people built such large and ornate structures without the use of modern tools. I think the tour guide even said that they hadn't discovered the wheel when these were built. (Although I might have gotten that mixed up. I stopped listening when I realized that EVERY sentence described something that was 'muy importante') And how exactly do the archaeologists figure out what it all means? There was a big long explanation about this one area that was used for a sort of game and the winner would be sacrificed to the gods. This apparently was a great honour to be so important that you would be chosen as a sacrifice. Who knows, this story could be true, but don't you ever get a tiny feeling that someone somewhere is getting a great laugh out of what the tourists will believe?!?!?!

And of course some of the best times are always spent lazing around doing nothing in particular. Our floor of the hotel had a sitting area at one end, open to the air of course, and we spent an evening laying on the couches watching the lunar eclipse. I also still get a kick out of watching cartoons and movies in spanish! Oh that reminds me - the only english tv channel we got there was american news. If I never hear about Hilary and Obama again...it will be too soon. But my roommate and I enjoyed the morning infomercials while we got ready each day!

And a good time was had by all :)

Lots of love
Pamela

p.s. How is it that I have NEVER won on roll up the rim?? I think Tim Horton's hates me.
