Good things come in small packages

It is quite possible that every dream I have ever had came true this morning.

It all started when we were doing rounds in the nursery. Basically the way these rounds work is that you go see your babies in the morning, examine them, write notes & orders, and then we sit down as a team and discuss whether you made the right decisions. We pull a whole bunch of chairs into the nursery, the nurses tend to wander off on break, and we hang out in the middle of all the cots and isolettes and discuss the state of life for all these little premature cuties. Well my little cutie tends to think that rounds time should also be feeding time, and she makes her opinion known. Everyone else's baby sleeps quietly and occasionaly makes cute little baby gurgling noises, but not mine! Yesterday it got the point where my attending wandered over and picked her up, rocked her back to sleep while still explaining how to dose some drug, and then went and sat back down.

Today I was hoping she would be better. But no, she was worse. She also has this awful diaper rash so she's just grumpy in general and mom had not come in yet to breast feed this morning. So every two minutes I would hop up, reposition her, rewrap her, put her soother back in, and hope she would quiet down.

Finally the nurse went over, changed her, rewrapped her, walked right up to me and plopped her in my lap, as if to say - this is your problem, deal with her. And so there we sat, me and my beautiful little drama queen, cuddling for an hour while I discussed medicine. Every once in a while she would fuss and I'd rock her a bit or give back her soother, but mostly she just slept and stared at me. Of course my team made fun of me the whole time for how maternal I was. But they shut up quickly when I proved my multi-tasking skills and artfully rocked the baby, held her soother AND wrote orders in her chart all at the same time :)

In that moment, I got to be "mom" and "doctor" all at once. It was beautiful.

Lots of love
Pamela

  1. You go girl!
Sounds wonderful. And probably a great exercise for motherhood to come, should you ever choose that.
